Review # 1 was written on 2014-12-19 00:00:00 David Norstrom I'm biased. I love the transition era between the Late Republic and the Early Imperial, especially the era of the triumvirate. This volume covers that era. A fascinating book. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-11-05 00:00:00 Mike Xigarevidh Detailed second part of Appian's account of the Civil Wars - whereas the first part roughly covers history from the Gracchi to shortly after Caesar's murder (133-43), this one is dedicated to the events up to the defeat and death of Sextus Pompeius (43-35). A pity that Appian regards the final struggle between Octavian and Antony as not part of the Civil Wars. Most haunting are the various stories of proscribed Romans, no matter if they are saved or not (book IV, chapter 5-6). |
