[continued from here] The second part of this mini series of two short stories is not as gripping as the first one. The crew of the Aries is still on Mars and Jarivs and Leroy (the Frenchman of the crew) set out on a new expedition to salvage the films Jarvis had left in the wrecked rocket. Jarvis has the extra plan to find his alien friend Tweel, the intelligent ostrich, a plan which I very much appreciated. Well, Tweel is found and the crew members find out something about Tweel’s race and the Human race that rattles their view on the world… I think, Weinbaum wanted to add too much to this short story. A whole range of topics is addressed here that usually need much more space. Environmental issues, energy supply, the coexistence of different races, different models of society on Earth and Mars, etc. Everything is mentioned, but hardly discussed in a broader context. The story seemed a little rushed to me. The author died not long after publication of a serious illness. Perhaps, at this point, he just did not see enough time left for himself to write a deeper story? He was surly able to do that, as he proved with the first part. The sequel to "A Martian Odyssey" gives us a lot more background on the Martians and their history. It's just as imaginative as the first story, though the big reveal near the end is a big trope nowadays, and in my mind makes this one age a bit less well than Odyssey. Valley is still an interesting story. The main downside is that the focus is on, well, showing more of the Martians, and much less on establishing communications with aliens that think differently. A good yarn, entertaining, and it's nice to meet Jarvis, Tweel, and the crew again, but it's not quite as compelling as the original. So 4/5 from me, and basically a recommendation if you liked the first one, but not as important to the history of sci-fi.
