I am reading the Worldcat versoin through my library - a pdf created from scanned images. This is not the most eReader friendly way to read a book. Written in 1866, when the birth of Mormonism and the civil war are fresh history, Ms. C.V. White makes no apologies for her personal opinion that Brigham Young constitues a threat to the established government, and wishes he ruled Utah as a monarch rather than being subjected to the laws of the United States. In the prologue she states an apparently sincere desire to present balanced facts. We will see ... at finish... Way too many facts in some places. But the author was going for total disclosure of all known facts about Brigham Young and his dictatorship. The book was dull AND thought provoking. There was a new-to-me connection between the military skirmishes with Brigham Young and the USA, and officers later involved in the civil war. In fact there seems to be an unexplored connection between the USA handling of Brigham Young and the possible blue-print for succession by the south rebel states - not so much in the way they rebelled as in Southern expectations of the Northern response, Northern effectiveness and Northern resolution to wage war based on their response to Brigham Young's succession-by-migration. And BTW, it seems evident to modern eyes that Brigham Young was a typically corrupt dictator with a sociopathic lack of empathy and guilt.

This book is definitely prejudiced against Mormons. I found the historical information interesting.
