Review # 1 was written on 2020-03-18 00:00:00 David Smith More of a collection of historical examples of sorcery than a scientific investigation. Rohmer does not claim to be a believer, just sets out the information and lets the reader decide. Starts with some background of the genesis of sorcery, from ancient Egypt through the Oracle of Delphi and the Sybils of Rome. Included are many examples of sorcerous practices, most especially alchemy. The middle part is all about notorious practitioners of magic. Apollonius of Tyana, Nostradamus, Dr. John Dee, Cagliostro, and Madame Blavatsky are given short biographies focusing on their magical careers. The book ends with the inquisition and witch trials, all the way to the last witch-finder operating in 1913. The biographical parts are really interesting, and the rest gives just enough information to make you want to look into more in depth works. Of course, magic is a bunch of hoo-hah and none of this should be taken seriously. As soon as my almond tree blooms I'll be making my own magic wand. Then work starts on the philosopher's stone. Just for fun. It would be silly to believe in magic. |
