A year or two ago, I decided I wanted to get more comfortable cooking on the grill. This book has some good info to that end. While the book heavily favors a charcoal grill (not my preference), I like the basic info it includes -- things like grill temperatures and grades of beef. It's filled with casual grill food, not fancy stuff like some grilling books I've come across. And I've liked all of the recipes I've tried from this book. However, they tend to be more complicated than I would normally choose -- things you have to start hours or days ahead of time. The format of the book isn't my favorite -- for example, marinades and sauces are in a separate chapter, instead of together with the meats you would cook them with. And I didn't really relate to the commentary on the recipes so much -- seemed like lots of stories that weren't as funny as the author thought. Still, it's worth keeping around for its good-tasting down-home recipes.

My (Dutch) husband loves to barbecue, so a couple of years ago I bought him this book for his birthday. I think I use it more than he does because it offers a lot more than tips for barbecuing. In addition to the recipes for various marinades and rubs, there are also recipes for side dishes, desserts, and drinks. Our particular favorites are the pulled pork, the grilled shrimp, grilled potato salad, and the corn bread. Now, not being from the South myself, I was looking all over for a good easy recipe for corn bread - I found it here. My only criticism is that some of the same ingredients are used for many of the recipes: vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup. Otherwise, we (and our friends) have enjoyed some splendid dishes from this book.
