I bought this book for my younger sister last year for her birthday, and she really liked it. We're both horse crazy, having grown up in a family that supported the obsession with horses: horses of our own, horse shows, model horses, horse books, horse T shirts - you get the picture. At the time, my sister owned a beautiful blue roan sabino Tennessee Walking Horse mare. Stella, though pretty and possessing a phenomenal running walk (the trademark gait of a TWH), was not the horse my sister needed her to be. I thought this book would be an encouragement to her while she decided what to do with Stella. I was currently without a horse; my last one, a cute chestnut Mustang gelding, was sold after I'd had my first child and realized I didn't have the time to dedicate to him. But my kids were older now, and last December, I called on a gaited mare that had been for sale for some time. Her owner informed me she'd just been sold, and offered a Missouri Foxtrotter cross gelding instead. I took a trail ride on BJ (BlackJack) and fell in love. Julie sold Stella back to her previous owner, and bought a well-mannered buckskin Rocky Mountain mare named Gracy. We both had good, safe gaited riding horses. Curious about the book, and feeling a very deep connection and love for my new horse, I asked if I could borrow the book. I read it in one sitting, just yesterday. It was wonderful. I felt great empathy for this woman stuck in a loveless marriage, a woman who found what she so desperately needed in the form of an extremely energetic Appaloosa mare named Fanny. My own marriage is amazing. My husband fully supports my horse habit, and we are really soul mates. But reading about Betsy, who never really got any support from Wes, her husband, made me feel so badly for her. Betsy does a wonderful job of using the horse-rider relationship to fully demonstrate God's love for us, and His desire to lead our lives in a way to glorify Him, lives that are free and full. It was very compelling. I'm a Christian, and this whole new look at a relationship with God was amazing. I love this book. I would recommend it to both Christians and non-Christians, and to anyone who loves horses. Betsy's struggles to find a sense of balance, of peace, with both her life and her horse, and the way she did both, are uplifting. I cried in the last few chapters, when she had to put down her beloved Fanny. Even though my BJ is only 14, I know that accidents can happen anytime. And if he does make into it old age, at some point, the vet will have to be called, and my wonderful little gelding with the bossy attitude and propensity for nipping, will have to be put to rest. I don't look forward to that day. But like Betsy, I will be able to face that terrible time in my life knowing God is there, ever-loving, ever-watching, and He'll help me through it.

Are you looking for a single volume with a great collection of essays to spark thoughts & discussion about the purpose of life? This is it. Defining terms of authenticity and vocation, then asking tough questions about what we should do with our lives, Bass & Schwehn have pulled together an amazing set of readings. With sections that focus on questions such as: Are some lives are more significant than others? Are our jobs the most important source of our identities? and Should I follow my talents in choosing how to make my living? This volume strives to apply words from some of the greatest thinkers to questions we all have, particularly in college. Don't just abstractly discuss philosophy, let's apply it to questions I actually have! What a concept! Why doesn't every college require this kind of reading?
