The two stars are for the writing, not the song selection. Creswell is an awkward, sloppy writer, and he makes tons of factual errors. On the plus side, I like how he organizes the book. He picks his favorite 1,001 songs and presents them in random order, like they were playing on shuffle, with a history of the song's origin. His selection is varied, and includes a lot of obvious hit singles, cult and obscure stuff, guilty pleasures, and his own least favorite song of all time ("Bloody Well Right" by Supertramp.) Creswell is Australian, so he also includes a lot of great Australian punk, garage, and pop that would probably get overlooked in other lists of great songs. At any rate, it's probably the only song list that contains both "Metal Machine Music" and the Black-Eyed Peas. The book was kind of a chore to read, but I made an iTunes playlist of all the songs in his book I own, which has been fun to listen to.

1001 mostly great songs, from over the years, with a oddly endearing focus on Australian one hit wonders. Great bathroom book. Wide ranging, mostly stories about the song/artist. One fan's playlist, on shuffle.
