Review # 2 was written on 2017-04-10 00:00:00 Lisa Salecker This is a very interesting book of poetry. It's actually a non-fiction book about a variety of interesting animals, not the kind you would find in a zoo. Each page has a poem about the animal, then two to three paragraphs about the animal, a picture and finally one interesting fact. The poems are silly and quirky but the best thing is that they relate back to the actual animal. For example, the poem about the Loris says, "There's a loris in our chorus Who is really fat and furry. And that loris in our chorus Is impossible to hurry!" This is actually true. The loris does sing and it sings very slowly. The illustrations are very life like and show the animal in its natural habitat. Some of animals covered are: the Babirusa, the Colugo, the Kinkajou, the Tasmanian Devil, and many more. At the back of the book are activities that go along with the text. There is one about rhyming, another about phonics, several comprehension activities, and many more. I really liked this book. I thought it was a unique approach to a non-fiction book and it the activities would be very helpful for teachers. I would recommend the book to students interested in animals or those being required to complete an project about animals. Although it is a picture book, the vocabulary, text size, and content lend it to an older audience. Highly Recommended Grades 4 - 6. |
