A book about the greatest fighter pilots of World War II, all achieved in 274 pages is a tall order, so the details given are not surprisingly brief, tending to skim over the surface of the subject. That said, the writer is professional and knows his trade well. The text is let down more by lots and lots of misprints - for example, Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer shot down 1212 aircraft according to page 211. There are over 100 illustrations, the quality of which varies - some are poorly reproduced, some are out of context, some are wrongly captioned and some are photos of post-war museum aircraft. A book that tackles its subject in a basic, by-the-numbers approach and just is not very special.

With its bits and pieces of information of which I was not aware of, this book was worth reading. (E.g. I haven't read much - if anything - about German torpedo bomber attacks on the invasion fleet, a subject to pursue?) One thing though; As my mother tongue is not English I found the 'flow of words' in the book a bit . . messy may be too strong a word. However, I sometimes found myself reading sentences and passages without getting the full meaning of them. And thus had to back and read them again. But then again, that's the challenge and the fun in reading in other languages . . . .
