Review # 1 was written on 2021-03-02 00:00:00 Serge Flore I really like Harold Macgrath, his stories are never the same. This is reminded me of Henry de Vere Stacpoole and Madeline Brent in theme. The heroine has grown up on a South Sea island, the daughter of a dour, loveless missionary. At the age of 20 she escapes by selling some pearls to a trader and hopping on a boat going to Canton. There she sees the world for the first time and meets a man who is trying to kill himself with drink. Not because he's a drunk but because he too is escaping from... something. In a medical emergency she nurses him and the plot thickens. So I really enjoyed this, my only peeve was that I thought the ending too abrupt. I wanted a little bit more. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-06-28 00:00:00 James Bonkovsky This is the best if the Alan Quartermain books, at least that I have read to date. it is the third book of the story, but can be read as a stand alone story. I do suggest that you do read this series of stories as written by the author, as it does provide for the greatest enjoyment of this timeless work! I thoroughly enjoyed the plot, characterizations and writing that the author wove so skillfully that it was difficult to put down once started. The story, though set in the conflicts if the British Empire, is an eternal yarn of love and hate, loyalty and revenge, bravery and terror; all bound in a matrix of the supernatural and of adventure. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did! |
