Intro to sociology, Freshman year, Fall semester, 2000. I read an earlier edition of this book then. Now I have selected it for the social problems course I teach some 16 years later. Why? More than mere nostalgia, of course. The classical readings are strong and digestible, while the cross-cultural work is often illuminating. As for 'contemporary,' this might be a bit of a misnomer, as many of the contemporary readings are 20 years old. Generally, they offer good insights, but will need to be supplemented with some newer data and perspectives. Still a decent ground-level sociology book after all these years...
