This book provides some fascinating glimpses into life for the Native American tribes in Jefferson and Clallam Counties of Washington State. The author comments on texts written by a minister who traveled in the area, descendants of Indians, and others. I often found myself thinking, "Wow, I didn't now that!" For example, I hadn't known about "Chinook Jargon," a very limited vocabulary for communication between whites and tribes. This was used to complete complex treaties that devastated the Indians. I hadn't known about the Indian Shaker Church, the different ways Indians earned money in the late 19th century (making shark oil, sealing, and picking hops), or that Port Townsend has two memorials to Chief Chetzemoka. I had known about the racism and the reservations, and this book tells how they worked in this part of Washington State. This book is confusing at times because there is a lot of repetition and a lack of historical continuity. Perhaps that is improved in the second edition, which I didn't read.

This book contrasts the written records of European colonizers with the oral history of the tribes along the northwest coast of Washington. As expected, tales of similar incidents are dramatically different depending on whose perspective we read/hear. The outcome for the tribes is similar across the continents: disease, alcoholism, massacres, deculturation, pillaging of land and villages, bogus treaties. Unfortunately, awkward formatting and poor editing made this book very difficult to read.
