• This selection of thematically written poems captures several different biomes in nature such as ocean, desert, rainforest, grassland, etc. The poems vary in length and in style but share a common goal: to make the reader feel as if they are in the biome that is being described. In a poem about the desert, for example, evocative language makes me feel the heat from the glaring sun and dries out my throat as I swallow. I envision myself stranded in the desert with the scorpions, sand whipping across my face, and no water supply in sight. Both Lewis and Canyon are masters of crafting diction and illustrations that truly transport the reader to the environment. • Considering that each environment is very different from the next, reading through the book makes the reader feel as if they are traveling. This provides children with excitement and anticipation for what might come next and could be used in several content areas. For science, students could use this text as an introduction to the different biomes found in the natural world by recording details of each one. For language arts, the poems could be used in a creative writing lesson to show the power of imagery and could serve as a jumping point for students to write poems about their school and home environments. Finally, this text could also be incorporated into a social studies lesson about the geographic characteristics of certain regions, countries, or continents. • I actually used this book in a 2nd grade classroom and found that group reading was successful and engaging. It is recommended for grades 2-4 but I wouldn't hesitate to use it in a 5th or 6th grade classroom as a supplemental piece to a unit.
