This is a very specialized book that looks at the political leanings in Quebec's Eastern Townships. It is not something I would recommend for someone looking for a light read. It deals with two time periods - the War of 1812 and the 1837 Rebellion. I read it looking for background information on a research project. The second part of the book was a surprise for me on several levels. First, I live in the area of Vermont near Troy and Derby and grew up crossing the border into Stanstead. I am an avid student of history and Vermont history in particular and had never heard a peep about these events. Secondly many of the surnames mentioned in this part of the book are family names that are still in the area. i wonder how many know of their family history.

Pretty special interest - I'm working on the Canada/US borderlands, so obviously relevant to my continued research. This is all about the Eastern Townships when they were populated almost entirely by settlers from New England (and some Scots and Irish), and what was happening there during the War of 1812 and the rebellion years of the 1830s. Lot of detail, really surprisingly a lot of detail for a hundred-page book. I was surprised at the argument that there really wasn't much of a "British North American" identity forming until as late as the 1830s/40s. I'm also interested in this idea that Vermont just had a lot more social and cultural "tumult" and that caused a deepening of the border difference.
