Review # 1 was written on 2017-06-22 00:00:00 Rosalyn Watson In the early 1970s, Princeton University launched a program where incoming freshmen would hike together in the wilderness to get to know each other before classes started. This quickly became popular among American universities, and over the years a large body of collective experience arose. THE BACKPACKER'S FIELD MANUAL was conceived as a compendium of advice for guides leading hikers through America's state and national parks. It was written by Rick Curtis, director of Princeton's program for |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-04-03 00:00:00 Luis Fernando Pena Argueta It was interesting, but very beginner level stuff. It basically made me realize I need more details on a lot of the sections included. It's a good overview for you to realize, "oh, okay, now I need to go buy books that specifically talk about how to read maps, etc". I haven't read a whole lot of backpacking books, but I would imagine that are more comprehensive ones out there. |
Review # 3 was written on 2018-02-26 00:00:00 Lia Waroka Pretty interesting read, and a handy manual. |
Review # 4 was written on 2018-10-14 00:00:00 Anthony Goins About as expected: a field guide on all of the ins and outs of backpacking, and really goes from soup-to-nuts on the process: from preparing and packing, through equipment descriptions and travel, all the way through first aid, and even a bit on outdoor leadership. Solid guide. After hiking and camping for several years, I still found some useful parts here, tricks on the trail, a remind of what the heck declination is anyway, that sort of stuff. The read was pretty dry and straight forward, and |
Review # 5 was written on 2011-12-15 00:00:00 Christopher Bjelland Super, super helpful. They have information for all levels, whether you are just starting or are a seasoned hiking. I found myself skimming a lot of the basic information in the beginning, then re-reading skills I never thought about. Definitely going to be re-checking this out before every trip. It has endless timps and tricks to help you. |
Review # 6 was written on 2019-10-28 00:00:00 Nikki Freedfr Lots of stuff but on the basic side Good info here if you have no experience but if you were a Boy Scout or camped/hiked more than a few times, you dont need this. |
Review # 7 was written on 2019-11-29 00:00:00 Stephen Vesecky This book could be used (and I'm sure it is) used as a textbook to accompany an outdoor hiking class in high school or college. I mean this both as a warning and a complement to the author. My first thought when finishing this book was that the author did a great job of reviewing a ton of the components of backpacking, but did little to tie everything together to give the reader a step-by-step process for readying for a trip. After a little reflection and review, I realize that you really could |
Review # 8 was written on 2020-03-27 00:00:00 June Paul Solid book to cover the basics of handy skills & important info for backpacking. Could be 4 stars because its a solid read, but I give it 5 stars because I see myself coming back to some pages for a quick refresher on information. I see a lot of lesser reviews because the book didnt cover enough detail in all of the areas... This book wasnt meant for that & the author clearly states there is too much information in every area he touches upon to be included in the book. For any in-depth readin |
Review # 9 was written on 2021-03-06 00:00:00 Bryan Sillman Good overview of backpacking but not something I think would be worth the weight to carry out into the field, so I'm not sure I'd really agree with the "Field Manual" title. Much of the first half of the book is preparation, equipment etc. |
Review # 10 was written on 2017-05-09 00:00:00 Gary Scotts This book has lots of great information for anyone planning a backpacking or camping trip. The author covers it all, from what clothing to wear, to how to select a sleeping bag, to first aid, and survival in every type of situation. |
Review # 11 was written on 2019-07-02 00:00:00 Todd Mozingo Above average (yet not the best) survival book. It has a rather large/nice section on first aid |
Review # 12 was written on 2018-01-16 00:00:00 Kirk Webb Everything you could ever want to know about backpacking, from the merits of different types of clothing materials, to how to read several different kinds of maps, to emergency medical care. |
Review # 13 was written on 2018-01-17 00:00:00 Therron Woerner Thorough and helpful... |
Review # 14 was written on 2018-05-23 00:00:00 Debra Bessette I would recommend it for anyone just getting started, or those with experience who just want a handy manual to keep at the ready. |
Review # 15 was written on 2021-04-13 00:00:00 Andrew Lightheart I read about 25% straight through and will read the rest as reference. This was great and really informative. |
Review # 16 was written on 2021-05-15 00:00:00 Susan Kissell Super helpful for a general rundown of backpacking techniques. Kind of outdated in the age of technology in the wilderness, but the practices are applicable nonetheless. |
Review # 17 was written on 2021-07-01 00:00:00 Miguel A. Medrano This was an incredibly heavy/dense book featuring pretty much any topic you could want to read on surviving the outdoors. And I say surviving and not a different word, such as enjoying, because it was very much a direct no-nonsense guide. The chapter on first aid is over 100 pages long, and basically the entire time I read it my face was twisted in a queasy expression and I had to stop every couple of paragraphs to put the book down. It was heavy and detailed, which is definitely what you want in |
Review # 18 was written on 2020-04-08 00:00:00 Patrick Brugger This book provides a comprehensive introduction to backpacking and covers both preparation and the skills needed for wilderness hiking and camping. The book is topically arranged and easy to navigate. Throughout the book, it refers back to other sections to provide a handy reference for field use. The manual includes helpful information on safety and an extensive section on first aid and emergency care. The book prepares the reader for the various things one might experience in the back country |
Review # 19 was written on 2015-08-15 00:00:00 Vernon Nikunen An absolutely excellent book on the basics of backpacking and being outdoors. Each section was copiously detailed with the general knowledge and more in depth knowledge where needed. The author provided many tertiary resources to continue the learning. In particular, I loved the middle of the book the most. This included the Leave No Trace chapter, Wilderness Travel chapter, and the Weather chapter. I learned the most from them as I was the most ignorant in those areas. I highly recommend this book |
Review # 20 was written on 2015-09-21 00:00:00 Thomas Dinges Extremely useful backpacking/camping/wilderness survival book. Small enough to be taken with you when go hiking, but you'll need to keep it from getting wet obviously. Very comprehensive section on wilderness emergencies and injury treatment that was quite useful on a recent wilderness survival course. |
Review # 21 was written on 2011-07-30 00:00:00 Shane Gossert While the book is pretty thorough, I was disappointed that it didn't cover hot-weather backpacking in more detail. There's a lot of emphasis on winter backpacking (which is reasonable since there's so much that's different from typical three-season trips), but high temperature/high humidity trips are only covered in a line or two here and there. Otherwise, this is a great resource. |
Review # 22 was written on 2012-03-29 00:00:00 Thomas Richter Nice guide for backpackers. I am new to backpacking and camping and this book is a good reference guide of what i need to know. The book covers skills on all of the basics - picking out your gear/equipment, nutrition, navigation, weather, first aid, etc, etc. I will be adding this book to my pack until i am no longer a newbie. |
Review # 23 was written on 2012-12-09 00:00:00 Etienne Cornu Excellent backpacking and outdoors skills info by the man who developed Princeton University's outdoor education program (the backpacking freshman orientation week before starting college there. His program became a national model for other colleges.) |
Review # 24 was written on 2008-03-29 00:00:00 Stephanie Lentz Good reference book. I would recommend for anyone thinking about taking their first backpacking trip. The book covers all the major topics for backpacking. The section on first aid could have been more concise, but would rather have a thorough book than one without any detail. |
Review # 25 was written on 2016-01-24 00:00:00 Daniel Forte This is the backpacking book that I carry around the most. It can truly be considered a handbook its compact but quite information-packed. (However, I dont know if any handbook can truly be comprehensive.) |
Review # 26 was written on 2019-09-12 00:00:00 Chris Franco Pretty good... Filled with info for anyone preparing a trip "Into The Wild..." |
Review # 27 was written on 2008-04-04 00:00:00 Christopher Williams Really good skills/basics for camping/backpacking. As I want to camp more often, and have zero skills in the realm this book will be my main resource. |
Review # 28 was written on 2010-02-23 00:00:00 Ivan Velez thorough review of backpacking skills. another essential for first time backpackers. |
Review # 29 was written on 2010-08-08 00:00:00 Krystal Frost Wouldn't have known where to even start my first long distance hike without the knowledge I gleaned from this book. Terrific source and written in a way that makes it not so textbook like and boring. |
