This is a highly technical book. I really doubt people with no background of medical education can even read pass the Introductory esaay. The author is a doctor and he is very conversant with the topic at hand, as evident by his writing. He is a lettered man I reckon (he seems to know Latin) so it made the reading experience a pleasant one. But I must remind, that doesn't mean that it's easy. His treatment of the subject is masterly, true, but he dwells to much on the petty details, and the author frequently went on quoting at length some of the advices or clinical findings made by the ancient writers....in Latin! With no allusion to it's meaning and at times the lengthy quote took more than 5 lines. Nevertheless, the chapter on Islamic medicine is probably the best exposition of the subject that I read - it's very detail in it's description, and as I mentioned above, you won't understand the gist of it of you aren't a doctor (or have somewhat intermediate medical education). Not everyone's cup of tea, definitely. But if your intention is to get to know the history of medical thought in general and/or specific, you'll get more than you ask for.

Contains literary analyses of several Chinese writers, such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, and Eileen Chang, dating from the Literary Revolution (1917-1927) to the rise of Communism (1928-1957).
