This lavishly illustrated biography chronicles the life and times of Grace Carpenter Hudson, daughter of Northern California pioneers and one of the West's most accomplished painters of Native Americans. Grace Hudson's story encompasses the westward movement of pioneers, the struggle to end slavery, the conflict between Native Americans and white settlers, and the Culture of the Pomo Indians of Northern California. For more than forty years, Grace and her husband, Dr. John Hudson, a physician and ethnographer, dedicated their lives to the study and preservation of the Pomo Indian culture. John Hudson's research on the culture and artifacts of the Pomos lent authenticity to Grace's paintings and formed the basis of collections at the Smithsonian Museum and the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago. Grace's more than 650 portraits of her Pomo neighbors provide a unique contribution to Western Art, and one that will never be equaled. The Pomos loved three things above all else: their children, their baskets and their dogs. Grace's most memorable paintings are a testimonial to that love. Her stunning and realistic portrayal of Pomo children became her passion, caught the eye of the public and brought her national celebrity at the age of thirty. Extensive personal correspondence dating back to the Civil War, as well as previously unpublished photographs, give a picture of this remarkable couple and their close relationship to the Pomo people. To quote Melissa Carpenter, wife of Grace's nephew, "All they ever talked about was Indians." Visitors to the Grace Hudson Museum and education complex in Ukiah California will find this book to be an excellent overview of the Museum's history and scope as well as a comprehensive introduction to the life and times of the Hudsons, the settlers, and the Pomo indigenous peoples.

I just noticed the average rating for this book was 4 stars. Yuck. The author does a decent job putting together Kurt Cobains' life and rise to fame. In the last chapters he takes "creative license" in describing Kurts' last moments, all the way to his suicide. It's disgusting. No one was there (that we know of). He has no right.
