Review # 1 was written on 2018-03-25 00:00:00 Brandie Spoon Although Oliver's book is not an easy read, I found his exploration of memory to be really interesting from a historian's perspective. I'm less convinced when he wanders off into psycho-analysis, but his treatment of media coverage of the My Lai (Son My) massacre is particularly engaging. Oliver argues that narratives focusing on the 'real' victims of the American War in Vietnam--namely the inhabitants of the region--have been displaced in American popular memory in favor of those that highlight American experiences. Oliver uses My Lai as a kind of case study to examine the various processes that enabled this displacement. I doubt many people will look kindly on his section related to PTSD (which he claims is a kind of fictional disorder that allows veterans to overcome their feelings guilt by focussing on themselves rather than their victims), but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I could probably tally on one hand the number of books that I've found 100 percent convincing. |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-01-10 00:00:00 Paul Clifford It really has good detail. My thinking is that the stupidest thing that they have done is put a heated ball into a mortar. |
