Subtitled “Helping Your Teenagers Find Success and Satisfaction in their Future Careers,” the author is Dr. Lapin, the chair of the Department of Student Development and Pupil Personnel Services at the U. of Mass, Amherst. This comprehensive book introduces the career development process in a very practical and hands-on manner, touting the significance of parental involvement and the importance of asking questions and listening, NOT lecturing. To quote the author, “If you listen, they will talk; if you lecture they will walk.” The five key targets he has identified for career decision-making are treated in order. They are helping your teenagers to: 1. become proactive, resilient and adaptive adults. 2. believe in themselves. 3. create effective educational and career goals. 4. know themselves. 5. pursue their interests. I found the chapter five examples exceptionally useful, as the author presented a number of diverse situations and individuals with guided interpretations and conclusions for each. The assessment process presented in chapter six was extremely comprehensive and a bit unwieldy, although the topics covered are all worthy of consideration. The World of Work Map on page 94 (link in the book was incorrect, should be www.act.org/wwm/index.html) and iits correlation with O*Net are powerful tools for investigating career alternatives. The book ends by listing some additional online links and guided advice on finding a college, paying for college and developing a formal, benchmarked plan for success with your teenager. Although somewhat overwhelming in its comprehensiveness, there are some real jewels to be mined from this book.

Approaches sales perofmrance from a data-based perspective, where clear links have been made between performance & fit between the role & individual strengths/talents. Uses strengthfinder as a mechanism for identifying top talents from a set of 34 themes. Once strengths are known, need to ensure fit (along dimensions of motivation, relationship building, gaining commitment, structure of work, and ability to understand & solve customer needs) and then ensure a good manager. Also covers the move to sales management, where fit to providing employee engagement needs (on p124 of book) is key. Lastly, covers some advice from lead sales managers: - rehire the best - appreciate uniqueness - lead from strength (spend most time on top performers) - be a buffer - hire the best - lots to do (work hard) Good, data based approach to masimising engagement in work/roles & also for ensuring that in others. ----------------------------- MY STRENGTHS Top 10 (best first) Competition Arranger Achiever Communication Self-Assured Focus Individualization (thinks/respects everyone is different) Positivity Significance (I want to be recognized) Woo Bottom 5 (worst first) Includer Adaptability (not focused on future and future plans, but the present and willingness to meet the demands of the moment) Intellection (liking to think for thinking's sake) Consistency/Fairness
