I'm loving the language and lyric tone in this novel, the gentleman Mr. King and his artist friend Mr. Forbes, are travelling between various posh vacation spots in 19th century U.S., FORTRESS MONROE, The Catskills, Atlantic City - in and out of season, in pursuit of inspiration and maybe discretely in pursuit of certain charming, young ladies. The poetical atmosphere reminds me a little of "The Age of Innocence", and the writing and observations on an America long gone are interesting. I'm glad I discovered Mr. Warner's books :-)

3.5 stars I picked up this book more as a matter of research after reading about it in Mary Cable's Top Drawer: American High Society from the Gilded Age to the Roaring Twenties, as I'm writing a series set in the Gilded Age and involves resort life. From a research perspective, this book is excellent. It gives a real sense of not only the ins and outs of resort life in the Gilded Age but also the psychology and sociology behind it. In fact, it was a little too much like a travelogue more than a novel in many areas. Also, the character of Irene started to annoy me. She was the typical naive young woman but her naivety bordered on a stupidity that didn't suit her intelligent character. I enjoyed the book for the most part but other readers might find the copious descriptions of Easter Coast resort town landscapes a little too much.
