Review # 1 was written on 2020-06-03 00:00:00 Cary Grant This short book is an assembly of eight essays by noted historians of how Confederate president Jefferson Davis got along (or didn't) with his field commanders: Joseph E. Johnston, Robert E. Lee, P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, and John Bell Hood. There are also essays on their wives, Jeff Davis in pictures, and one on Davis' strategy for winning the war (the "offensive-defensive" explained). Readers familiar with the war may find some of this to be almost common knowledge. For example, the prickly Joe Johnston find himself in nearly everything that isn't Gettysburg. The book's real value will be finding what one didn't know before. For this reader, it was learning of Davis' adept handling of "Old Bory." Also, Davis and Lee weren't as "hand and glove" as is usually supposed. I wish there had been articles on Generals Pemberton and Cooper; but Civil War Generals in Defeat and Leaders of the Lost Cause: New Perspectives on the Confederate High Command cover those.
