Rissman, Rebecca. Shapes in Sports (2009). This is a great book for connecting with students that enjoy sports. The beginning makes the connection of shapes being all around us and has a page dedicated to each shape and its name. The reader is then walked through all of the different shapes we see in sports such as checkered squares in a racing flag. The format of the book is interesting as well. A picture is shown on the right page and a question is asked such as, “What shape is in the sandpit?” The child is given the opportunity to respond before turning the page to see the highlighted answer. Readers can find a multitude of shapes on every page and at the end they are asked to recall the shape names they remember. Target Audience: Preschool-Kindergarten

Each photo of a sports scene clearly shows a specific shape. On the next page the photo is shown again, but this time with the specific shape outlined in a bright color. The text is very large, simple, bold, and specific. Great book for helping us to see shapes in the environment around us.
