I did not know Lawrence wrote poetry… Its proving to be very educational. I read something like this line… Is there some great Iacchos of these slopes Suburban dismal? And then I run off to look up who Iacchos is so that I can work out what Lawrence is referring to. Note: he's the minor god and perhaps son of Persephone or Demeter, who was invoked during nocturnal rituals at Delphi. So here, where he walks up the stairs to see tall dark (and he perceives mourning) creatures, it makes sense that there must be a 'suburban' god of mourning who comes out after dark. I'm reminded of the Billy Bragg song Tank Park Salute that has a line about 'at the top of the stairs… is darkness'. That song makes me cry… every damn time. I've always thought that songs are just poetry to music. PALIMPSEST OF TWILIGHT Darkness comes out of the earth And swallows dip into the pallor of the west; From the hay comes the clamour of children's mirth; Wanes the old palimpsest. The night-stock oozes scent, And a moon-blue moth goes flittering by: All that the worldly day has meant Wastes like a lie. The children have forsaken their play; A single star in a veil of light Glimmers: litter of day Is gone from sight. A palimpsest is a manuscript where the writing has been scraped off so that it can be re-used. How clever a metaphor for a day is that? And he finishes with words of love… Lovely stuff 4 stars
