Most of the featured writers/witnesses are brilliant communicators. The end result of the project is a very favorable one. This project should become a numbered series featuring additional witnesses in each subsequent issue and including more non Puerto Ricans that might prove to be less emotionally involucrated. It is always healthy and, why not, amusing, to know how outsiders see us. My take, having being born in the Bronx and raised in Puerto Rico, with some significant stints among blue chip Americans, is that, like Bono said: we are one, but we are not the same; we hurt each other, and we do it again. I feel eighty percent Puerto Rican, and twenty percent American. We are two different and distinct civilizations, and we do not mix. We worship our island and what it makes us become. I love the USA and blue chip Americans but I rather exist in this island. By the way, I am extremely unpopular among Puerto Rican islanders that just can not come to terms with what they really are. I still love them because they are just very afraid people; our flesh and its concerns is something very powerful.

Not impressed. The initial political concepts addressed are interesting, and the book drops off from there. The book presents a very narrow point of view with opinions trying to parade as facts by using fancy words and footnotes, insulting the reader's intelligence. We all know that support for any point of view on any subject can be footnoted; this is not an indicator of a scholarly text. A whole chapter on the importance of hair salons? That whole chapter is more like a Tyler Perry movie than a text. Overall, I found this book to be at best boring and at worst offensive.
