Review # 1 was written on 2011-03-20 00:00:00 Chris Howard I was hesitant to begin this collection of short stories. I was afraid stories about love would be trite and unoriginal. Luckily, I was wrong. Starting with a quote by Bukowski certainly had me primed for something interesting. The stories involved love but often not ideal or romantic love, more along the lines of stories exploring love in present society, resigned love, self-love and self-deluded love. The types of love stories I find interesting. My favorties were the first and last of the collection, The Fabulous Omar and Taking the Happy Bus on Home. Both were very moving and sad. I also loved Fetish, which was hilarious. These three stories I wholeheartedly rate 5 stars, with the remaining two stories easily deserving 4 stars, so my final rating was not a difficult decision. What I loved best about this book was it made me consider and feel. I thought about how each story relates to my personal life, and I felt a melancholic acceptance after each story due to the overwhelming honesty of the writing. All of this together made me realize that the deceptively simple quality I love was heavily present. The book was also well written and accessible and strong beginning to end, which is not so common with short fiction. Highly recommended for fans of short fiction and thoughtful storytelling. |
Review # 2 was written on 2008-04-28 00:00:00 Bradley Sachs There are just five not so short, short stories in this unbelievably rich collection, and while love may be the operative word here, I'm not sure anyone would call them love stories, per se. Now that said, are these stories all about how love gets warped, lost, manipulated, sublimated, twisted, fetishized, tainted and occasionally celebrated? Yes, and more. And so do I think you should you read this collection? Yes, again, for sure. |
