i would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in meanings rather then treating what we are given as truths. this book might be preceived by many as relevant only to those who are interested in pursuing sociology but in my opinion, this book with its uncomplicated writing and the explaination of any sociological jargon it might use, would be useful for anyone wanting to understand the swirling vortex of meaning and identity and cultural ethos that we deal with on a day to day basis. the question of identity...whether it be racial, religiou or ethnic, is more important now than at any other point in history and just how much of the social stereotypes we let sink into our psyche: i think we need to introspect about that. as Berger says, the real problem we have is "how to be human beings." he discusses in very clear, concise and simple fashion how man is as much a product of his society as the society is a product of him along with questioning the world of meanings and symbols we are confronted with each day and just how much they have socialised our worldview, weltanschauung and how much our own actions everyday add to that. Verstehen, or understanding is what we need. For people, who are more inclined to empirical and positivistic studies, this book would not be agreeable. it is descriptive in nature. All in all, i found it useful and a pleasant read, not to mention, thought provoking.
