Knowing a bit about Walt Whitman, a poet, journalist and lover of freedom, his political beliefs and interest in the USA labour movements helps us to recognize this collection as a masterpiece in world literature. Having read about some of his close friends, eg. the Wright Brothers, I expect to find alot of deep messages within this collection. He says he is an "acme of things accomplished and an enclosure of things to be". He refers to his poetry as "not works of routine, this song of mine..... Words are simple as grass.... and behavior lawless as snowflakes". Whitman meanders here and there with his colourful lines of poetry, forming everchanging pictures in our minds. "Poems are pictures, he says". One whole page is devoted to the topic of the "Alamo" ; here he shares his thoughts on the death of 412 men, all under 30. From there he moves on to thoughts about God and then to his love of the human body where he explores procreation and sexuality. He speaks to the reader of his poems as if he was sitting at our side helping us to interpret the events in his life and the 19th century in America. "Be it as if I were with you; be not too certain but I am now with you," he says. I look forward eagerly to my daily ritual of reading Walt Witman's poems. I may finish this book alot faster than I expected. My book is only 432 pages and is a paperback, not listed within parameters of this site.
