Review # 1 was written on 2014-02-15 00:00:00 Clarissa Reupert This is a good YA nonfiction book, but I found it marred in some ways. For one, I couldn't quite discern the audience it was aimed at; it's the size and shape of a children's hardcover, yet very text-heavy, and full of lurid accounts of pirate violence -- maimings, murder, pillage and rape. Text-wise it seems to be aimed at older middle school students, but the packaging looks like a children's book, which seems counter-productive. I was also heartily annoyed by some of the ending references to modern-day piracy, in particular the paragraph on pirate radio. The author spends most of the book debunking myths about historical pirates, pointing out that they were violent and by and large apolitical and interested only in their own gains. To place pirate radio operators on this same level is, I think, misleading. Radio pirates DO tend to be politically motivated, and the biggest personal gain they're going to get out of it is some fun -- I don't know how one would even begin to make money operating a pirate radio station; losing a lot of money is much more likely. I feel that if the author was going to bother to bring up pirate radio, he should have made some of these distinctions. |
