I was drawn to this book by its colorful maps and table of contents, which promised a wealth of facts on Christian history. Disappointed, this is a rare time I give a book a thumb down. Barely into the book, authors describe the formation of the land of Israel with the phrase, "Millions of years ago..." Knowing many Christians believe in recent history, authors would have done better to stick to historically recorded times. Before that is only speculative. Secondly, the authors label the geographical area of Israel, "Palestine," without explanation as to why they call it such. Do readers know that "Palestine" was a name the Egyptians gave to the Philistines (a nomadic and now extinct people who inhabited the land in the 5th Century BC)? Do readers know that later, the name, "Palestine" was reattributed to the land by Rome, in effort to diminish its association with Jews? Do readers know that only after 1948, when Israel regained independence, were Arabs on the West Bank and Gaza referred to as Palestinians? By authors assuming the label of Palestine, it makes readers wonder if they also do not like Israel. Lastly, all dates are given in the BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era). Was this done in an effort to avoid BC (Before Christ) and AD (anno domini, the Latin phrase meaning, "In the year of our Lord"). When authors of a book on Christian history avoid using dates referring to Christ, it makes readers wonder if they also avoid accurate facts. Baker Books: If you want to publish an atlas of Christian history, stick to the facts. Buyer beware: This book may look polished at first glance, but you may have to read it with a grain of salt.
