Henry IV - ***** An outstanding play. You can see my review of the Stoppard translation here: (09/14) The Man with a Flower in His Mouth - **** This is a moving one-act play and a view into living with death. Should the thought of death change us? Can we live a normal life thinking of death every second? Does focusing on our death make us more alive - or more inhuman? I think Pirandello would argue the former, but the play reveals the dark side of being constantly focused on death. Right You Are If You Think You Are - *** I could appreciate the idea Pirandello was trying to convey -- can we really know the truth? Is there a single truth? However I didn't like the mode he used to present it. Nor did I like the ending. The gossipy characters were exceedingly annoying. I think this idea might have worked better as a mystery or detective story. Some kind of noir atmosphere with a crime with no clear facts. Lazarus - ** This play is simultaneously a bit too pat and a bit too mystical for my tastes. The evil city is set against the good world of nature, dark vs. light, masculinity vs. femininity. The ending is preposterous (with Lia's miraculous recovery). Pirandello called it a mystery play, and in the English renaissance sense, it is a mystery play. I didn't like it.

I really liked this book a lot. At first I didn't understand what was going on, but after reading a little more, I was able to follow the plot. It contains interesting arguments about the time, including some very interesting critiques of the government.
