A colleague recommended I read this to get some idea of how sociologists can study medicine; the author was his dissertation advisor. The author draws upon his observations — which he informed very few people he was making, which certainly wouldn’t go over well at all today—as a patient in a tuberculosis hospital and similar observations at another hospital to write about how patients and hospital staff understand, navigate, and negotiate about the timetables of treatment, and then reflects on how this same process might occur similarly or differently in other structures of progress over time, including treatment for other diseases, jobs, and child development. Both because I come from a different academic field (psychology) and because of how much norms around research has changed since the 1960s, the results feel preliminary and very unsystematic (I suspect even a sociologist working today would agree at least somewhat). But the author did make a lot of interesting observations and points, especially about doctor-patient negotiation. I definitely plan to follow this up with other reading, and appreciate the historical and research background, even if the writing style was dry for my taste.

I've just read a one-star review of this book that was, to me, highly amusing. It has been one-starred because the reviewer thinks it is nothing but socialist propaganda, in other words it's going to lead toddlers and little children straight down the Red Road to Communism. I'm pretty sure the reviewer is American since no one in Europe would actually care whether it was socialist propaganda or not, socialism being a perfectly acceptable political philosophy there. Indeed many governments have been socialist, and why not? It's only another variant of capitalism as practised. Anyway, it was an enjoyable review so if you'd like to read it for yourself it's here Leila's review
