Review # 1 was written on 2018-04-02 00:00:00 Thaddeus Bouska My lack of knowledge about the historical setting of this drama -- the revolt of the Moriscos (Moors forced into conversion) during the reign of Philip II -- made it difficult for me to understand much of the subtext that might have spoken strongly to audiences in Calderon's time. Although I tried to do some background research on the history, I still had to struggle to understand how each character fit into the social/religious hierarchy of the time. Of course, my ignorance is not Calderon's fault, but I wish an English translation existed with appropriate footnotes, which may have allowed me to get more from this play.

Review # 2 was written on 2019-12-14 00:00:00 Thomas Potvin Al principio es un poco difícil de seguir, la historia, tantos personajes, la situación; pero conforme avanza se van aclarando las cosas poco a poco. No es la mejor obra que he leído de Calderón, pero sin duda tampoco es la peor.
