Review # 1 was written on 2019-12-20 00:00:00 Marck Binette Three short plays from 1917, of more interest as history than literature. One Bible story and two stories of good, suffering women trying to get sinners to turn to Jesus - the latter two are written in a dialect so thick (and often, so silly - I don't know how "w'ite" is pronounced differently than "white") that reading them is slow going - but there's interest here in how these pre-Harlem Renaissance works handle race, gender and religion, more for academics and historians than for anyone looking to stage forgotten black one-acts. |
