Review # 1 was written on 2012-06-20 00:00:00 Christof De Meyer Having an interest in Lord Byron and after purchasing so many of the books about him that my son now calls my sanity into question - I "gulped" at the price of this book and bought it! It is a book that examines Byron as a landed aristocrat and as such seeks to unravel his financial and business affairs, as opposed to his many reported "affairs of the heart"! Byron is often depicted as having being an impoverished Lord throughout most of his life beset by a feckless father, a greedy and vulgar mother, loan sharks, bailiffs and a want of ready cash that despite the inspiration for his poetry enhanced the difficulties throughout his "colourful" life. This book considers all of these factors in greater detail and offers a fresh perspective on Byron which is interesting and readable and is a very good book despite the cost. The book titled "Lord Byron Accounts Rendered" by Doris Langley Moore (Murray 1974) is a good companion to this book and is highly recommended. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-01-22 00:00:00 Andrew Hamasaki I got this from the library but would love to buy a copy for my own shelves as it's a great one to delve into. The nitty-gritty of life at Newstead Abbey before and during the poet's residence is thoroughly explored in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it in all its minutiae, well researched by a great authority on local social history. |
