France under the directory is an older study but one that provides an invaluable view to what life in France was like from the time of the Terror to the Rise of Bonaparte. The topics covered a very broad from education, rural life, city life, and the various social classes and how they interacted. Much time is spent on how the various political parties made up the directory and the way these parties interacted together to form new types of government. It was very much a shifting political situation and the result was an apathy of the public that allowed Napoleon to take control. The Directory enjoyed more support than is commonly associated to it and is demonstrated by how long the directory maintained power. One of the few complaints I have about the book is that there are many times where French is quoted and no English translation is provided. It does not detract heavily from the book but would have been nice to have some translations. Overall if you are interested in the Directory you cannot go wrong with this book.

Dogmatically Marxist interpretation of French history, and strongly anti-clerical
