In The Conquest of Deafness by Ruth E. Bender, you will gain a deep perception of the deaf and cultivate an understanding how the deaf has played a role in society. It explains as a timeline how the deaf society has grown from as early as 30 A.D to today. Like any disability the past is harsh and brutal, blunt and shameful but we can learn from our mistakes. The Conquest of Deafness was very filling to the mind and reached into my emotions. I saw broad insights from harsh judgements to deep thoughts of compassion. I enjoyed the positive insight from The Great Leonardo Davinci in his writings Of The Parts of the Face, in his Precepts of the Painter. He took notice of the deaf and concluded that lip reading was an art. “Although himself being deprived of the power of hearing, is none the less able to divine from the movements and gestures of the speakers the subject of their discussion. I once saw in Florence a man who had become deaf, who could not understand if you spoke to him loudly, while if you spoke to him softly without letting the voice utter any sound he understood you merely from the movement of the lips.” Not all the deaf can read lips very well but many can. No person is perfect, hearing or not. The book failed to convey how hearing and deaf people in society can interact and how we can change harsh discriminations that are happening today. I highly recommend this book for education, insight, and knowledge for a disability that still must fight today.

I thought this was a fascinating account of 4 men who traveled from Ecuador to Australia in a raft made of balsa wood. It took 6 months and the voyage was fraught w/danger and was not easy. Part of the experiment was to see if the men could be confined for such a long time in such a small space and not kill on another. Interestingly enough, they got along super well. Vital was wise and set down simple ground rules before the voyage began that they adhered to. It was a great story about an awesome adventure. It was also a good lesson in cooperation and ignoring others shortcomings to accomplish a goal. They also had a cat named Minet. I loved him and he also made the trip more bearable which shows that pets can really add a lot to any situation. I enjoyed it. It was a great read.
