While visiting the Met, I saw this book heavily reduced so I decided to pick it up as a souvenir. Not quite a coffee table book and not quite a regular book, Money: A History has plenty of pictures and words. The sections are split up by continent and history and while some sections were quite interesting, others were just okay. I enjoyed reading about Middle Eastern coins the most since I know little about them. A minor complaint is that the Roman section spends much of its time portraying the people and culture as materialistic as it does anything about the innovations in money at the time or even what kind of interesting things you can learn from them. Since that is my area of interest, I may be nitpicking here, but it certainly could have been stronger. Overall, it is small things like that that keep from wholeheartedly recommending this book.

As we are now, I suppose, ancient coin collectors of the most minor sort, decided to get a very broad overview of the history of coinage - this book, which I came across in a used bookstore (yes they still exist), served that end well.
