a5: Los Angeles, is a survey of the most modern buildings and architecture around L.A. The a5 series is designed to highlight the best in the latest building designs over the relative brief period of the last five years. The Los Angeles volume is the first edition of the series. In it, the author, Casey C. M. Mathewson, highlights mostly cutting edge design from both the residential and commercial applications, which like most books on L.A. design, is heavily skewed in favor of the former. Clearly, Southern California offers opportunities from the adventuresome spirit indigenous to the region as well as available urban land and a colorful, edgy clientele that attracts designers from the world over to work there. a5 showcases, not just the designs (which are mostly modern, stark, edgy and based on digital design) but the architectural teams that are making the most of the region. Structures featuring new materials and angular design are featured throughout – from Ventura’s remarkable Mussel Shoals residence to the famed Gehry-like Helio House gas station, the designs are plentiful and dramatic. A number of high profile firms – from Barton Meyers to Shubin + Donaldson – are profiled as to both their philosophies and projects. Between the two books, nearly 100 years of Los Angeles architecture are strongly showcased. As strong as each book is individually, they complement each other impressively as well.
