Review # 1 was written on 2017-10-19 00:00:00 Mike Craig This bugs me becaue I like specific poems by Szirtes across the whole spectrum of his published works: I can't be bound by just this edition. Where is 'the burning of the books' in good reads. Well, here goes: this poet has a unique turn of phrase, and more than anyone i've read, he has the ability to cross refer to famous/iconic pictures/poets/photographers/writers/etc without sounding pompous and like he's too big for his britches so to speak. Take his prologue to burning of the books. He says: Through the wainscoted corridors of the rathaus And the Groszbeggars stirred and shook a leg And the Dixwounded rattled their small change of limbs How cool is that? And then, I find out both Dix and Gosz were these marvelous artists in the 1950s (check them out) I'm personally going to rattle my small change of grey matter and read some more Szirtes

Review # 2 was written on 2018-05-02 00:00:00 Kevin Valdesere I heard Southey mentioned in another book I was reading. The other book was a guilty pleasure and won't be mentioned here. I got curious and looked Southey up on the net. Holy Toledo! He rips open your deepest fear and tells a story that Stephen King would shake in his boots at reading. This edition compares themes of Southey's poems to other sources. I am not in this to study poetry at this time, just to experience the raw power of this man's ability to describe the unconscious.
