This book is a collection of our collective understanding of how young students learn mathematics. It arrives from Schwartz's considerable experience in the field both through theory and practical experience. That said it reads more like a collection of articles than a cohesive book. Each chapter is organized in a way to give a general introduction to the central concepts of the chapter and is followed by examples that illustrate the implications of those topics in classrooms. The examples are instructive but often aren't fleshed out. Similarly the theory is completely accessible, but leave me feeling like there is more to be developed. The best bits of the book are chapters that easily stand on their own about "Designing Games and Activities" and about "Calendars and Clocks." These chapters manage to give structured advice for how to implement an early childhood mathematics curriculum that is about developing understanding and not about memorizing procedures. Overall, this is a useful resource for Preschool through 1st grade teachers, but not the ultimate or best source for designing a fully developed meaningful mathematics curriculum that integrates seamlessly into the life of a classroom which Sydney Schwartz clearly believes is the goal we should be aiming for in early childhood education.

This is wonderfully written with lots of effort put in. I felt that there are many sections which apply to the learning process in general. He is tough and not as gentle as one would like at times. I think that was an acceptable style.
