Review # 1 was written on 2019-10-28 00:00:00 Matthew Mclaughlin To be fair this book aimed to cover a lot of ground and I applaud their efforts. I think this is a great primer to look more specifically into the cost benefit analysis (CBA) of certain social programs. I would recommend this book if you are interested in one of the above social programs and want to learn more about how that social program is being evaluated, further readings about that program's evaluation/ CBA and where improvements can be made. I would not recommend this book as a general look into how we measure social impact and how we can measure impact moving forward. The reason it only earned a three stars is that it just scratched the surface level of the topics it addressed. While it did point to additional research for interested readers, I think the book focuses too heavily on CBA as a measurement of impact. I also think it failed to impart why CBA works better for some social programs (i.e. where great amounts of data are collected and monitored for each participant v. a program with limited points of contact with its constituents). I did like that the book focused heavily on what data would help to improve our knowledge of impact for ongoing CBAs, even if the collection of data would be difficult. The book addresses different CBAs out there for the following programs - Early Childhood Interventions - Elementary & Secondary Schooling - Health Care for Disadvantaged Populations - Adults with Serious Mental Illnesses - Illicit Substance Abuse & Addiction - Juvenile Crime Intervention - Prisoner Re-entry Programing - Housing Assistance to Promote Human Capital - Encouraging Work - Next Steps in Welfare-to-Work - Welfare-to-Work Incentive Programs It includes two additional chapters on: - Overview of the State-of-the-Art of CBA in Social Policy - An Agenda for Promoting & Improving the use of CBA in Social Policy

Review # 2 was written on 2019-02-14 00:00:00 William Martin hehe, a very partial take, but if like me you enjoy Martin Seymour-Smith's particulary opinionate partiality, then this could be one of the most influential books that you ever read. Certainly it's influenced me, helped me find my way through the human record. I bought copies for friends.
