Probably one of the ten most bizarre books I have ever read, this is a novel (of sorts) masquerading as the rules and history of an invented game. It's amusing in places, like all of Donleavy's work, but I must admit that I didn't really get it. Not remotely as good as The Unexpurgated Code . ____________________________________________ Well, that was what I thought a quarter of an hour ago. Now, I've poked around a bit on Google - Donleavy claims that the game of De Alfonce Tennis actually exists, and that people play it. Though I'm still sceptical. Anyway, if he's gone to these lengths to confuse the issue, the book does somehow appear funnier!

This is quite an unusual little book, particularly for Donleavy. However, unlike some of the other comments I've read about it, I don't feel the need to place this below his other works. I like a number of his other works, but this is another animal entirely and I think should be enjoyed on its own without comparison to Donleavy's more traditionally told tales. This one is very interesting in its basic narrative structure and is worth looking at just for that aspect. Of course, Donleavy has a marvelous sense of humor and wit that makes all of his books delightful to read, and this book is no exception.
