Review # 2 was written on 2013-02-11 00:00:00 Brett Graham An excellent and compelling study of Flannery O'Connor's fiction and theology. Extensive discussion of the influence of Jacques Maritain, one of the greatest Thomist philosophers of the early 20th century, give important background for O'Connor's theological outlook as it applies to art. The model/obstacle relationships as elaborated by René Girard are prominent in Srigley's analyses of "Wise Blood" & "The Violent Bear it Away," adding important advances in understanding these troubling but spiritually challenging novels. The book ends with a stunning reading of "Revelation" to show an emerging depth of O'Connor's sense of God's grace at work in a troubled world. Highly recommended for anyone interested in O'Connor, especially the theological dimensions of her works. |
