Hiss! Pop! Boom!: Celebrating Chinese New Year really does have some wonderful brushed artwork to go along with the text that it portrays. There is quite a bit of onomatopoeia used in the text and is definitely an attention grabber. It helps give more of an accurate perspective of a more traditional Chinese new years! This informational fiction truly can be interesting to children as there are quite vibrant illustrations and appropriate text that helps explain the plot of the story. The illustration really enhances the story. There is just this added affected when more onomatopoeias is used with such drawings. This story can be more appropriate for any aged reader, but more so younger readers as the text can be more intriguing to them. This book allows for readers to see what New Years in other countries can be like and the lifestyles of a family in China celebrating Chinese New Years. Although it seems to me that the author of this particular group is not apart of the group represented, she does a wonderful job of presenting the information accurately to others.

This book shares what happens on Chinese New Year in the Chinese culture. Using onomatopoeia, vibrant illustrations, and traditional Chinese calligraphy, the book gives an accurate perspective of what Chinese New Year a celebration looks (and sounds) like. I liked this book because I could relate it to my own experiences with Chinese New Year. My family celebrates Chinese New Year because my younger sister was adopted from China. This book could be used in the classroom to inform students about a celebration in a different culture and teach them things they did not know about Chinese culture. This book is for ages 7 and up because there is a lot of text. The theme of this book is celebration and I did not find anything problematic about the story.
