Review # 1 was written on 2020-04-06 00:00:00 Bonnie Cervantes This book caught my eye at Half-Price Books, in the clearance section. I finally got around to reading it this spring, and really enjoyed it. Howlett was a Unitarian minister who served churches in Boston and Washington, DC. In this book, he takes readers on a long journey through the history of critical thinking in religion, at least in the Western tradition (he briefly mentions some Eastern religious prophets but not much). Throughout, he shows that the "critical way" involves questioning everything, taking nothing on authority--not the authority of sacred texts or church councils or religious leaders. This might sound somewhat dry or abstract, but I found it engaging. I learned about a number of thinkers whom I hadn't heard of before, or knew little about. Howlett uses quotation and summary to give readers a good flavor of each person's thinking. I couldn't help but admire many of these skeptics who risked their reputations and sometimes lives for their principles. By the end of the book, no surprise, one is left with a never-ending quest for Truth. Question Authority! Think for yourself. |
