Review # 1 was written on 2018-10-26 00:00:00 Shannon Carrell Quick and entertaining read. A doctor who wanted to practice in the country couldn't make a living during the Depression, so he opened a practice in Manhattan, in Hell's Kitchen area, when told by his wife, "People are the same everywhere. So is medicine. You can be a country doctor in manhattan. I met this doctor's grandson when we were on vacation recently, and he mentioned the book to me. It's not 'great literature,' but it's full of Great Stories. Dr. Slocum's patients were spread across the entire width of the social strata of Manhattan of that era: upper class, pimps, gangsters, whores, poor, dirt poor, poorer-still, hypochondriacs, misers... Fascinating cross-section of what it was like to practice medicine 80 years ago in NYC, when the only drugs at the doctor's disposal were quinine, morphine, and digitalis. Really. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-10-27 00:00:00 Daniel Fayfar I would read this book over and over again, it is SO delightful, fascinating, and easy to read. The doctor paints beautiful vivid character descriptions that make you want to go back in time and experience it all at his side! I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good memoir! |
