Review # 1 was written on 2017-07-13 00:00:00 Jim Chalupsky Trying to decide why poetry is so difficult for me. Part of it is that most of this book, the poems were written long ago, with some challenging vocabulary. I seldom read with a dictionary close by so there was much I did not comprehend. I chose to read this title specifically to get myself out of my comfort zone and practice something "difficult". It felt like I often feel while reading scripture. So much abstract. So now I feel like I have read "Poetry for My Lifetime"! Out of 300 something poems, placed in 16 different categories, there were only about 10 that I truly enjoyed. This is the list: The Master by Unknown It Couldn't Be Done by Edgar A. Guest Worth While by Ella Wheeler Wilcox The Town of Don't-You-Worry by I.J. Bartlett A Friend's Greeting by Edgar A. Guest Wally's Bit of Wit and Wisdom by Wally Riddell - several little rhyming quotes The Leak in the Dike by Phoebe Cary - the classic story of the little Dutch boy and his finger The War Inevitable by Patrick Henry - stirring short speech, not a poem, "give me liberty" Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln - another non-poetic short but profound speech This book includes all the famous, classics that I have heard of but never really read through. It is a great collection - for poetry lovers :) That being said, I may try a more contemporary title on poetry in the future. |
