I have the Nook edition. I've just read the forward and based on that I can tell the author (Tom Watson) is very knowledgeable. As a photographer who spends time every year in the parks and often has permits for multiple states plus the nationals I suspect this will be handy book in digital form in that the maps and whatnot are black and white and perfect for greyscale. First updates: Tom is right in that you can call ahead to most state parks in Minnesota to reserve a site but you can also do this online as well. The above website is a good starting point. That being said there is an obvious advantage if you are in your car and not by a computer which is after all sort of the point. So having all those addresses and phone numbers in a Nook or Kindle would likely be handy with the GPS. Unfortunately in the preview of this book that I downloaded they did not include any of the maps or actual listings just the preface and so forth. After having just now experimented with various ways of displaying the maps and so forth I have to say that at least for the Nook Color I was doing it on the formatting is not good. Maps chopped off, bullet list of campground policy legible but sort of squished to one side. Basically I'd say it's the bound version of the book alright which is ok but they should have spent more time getting the maps formatted. Even reduced in size they would have been ok. I own both the color and a Greyscale version of the Nook as well as a Sony Reader and I'd bet that for Nook and Kindle readers the maps would have been fine if shrunk to fit the screen. On my Ipad I expect it will be the same issue. Perhaps at some point there will be a firmware update to let you zoom in/out but not as I'm writing this. Of course there is always the PC/Mac versions of the reader app which might work fine but part of my purpose was to have a reference in a light format to carry in the car. Having addressed what I see to be the major short coming in the ebook version I'll move on to why I still think that for the price I'd recommend it and give it a fairly high rating for a book that has formatting issues. Firstly I recognize the maps I'm seeing. You will find them at the ranger stations in the state park for free. So yes I would like to have seen it done right as far as making maps fit right but it's not that big of deal and over time as trails change you might want to get the newest maps anyways. I've been photographing and traveling around the state parks in various states for about 20 years and since I'm from Minnesota I know them a bit better. For the person who wants to get off the beaten path and away from people who may be annoying this book is making good selections. I recognize and/or have been to practically every site in the book I like his criteria. When I am shooting in forests or doing landscaping I hate man made intrusions and I travel light. If that appeals to you then for $10 in ebook form it's good tome to add. He could have probably added in some longitude and latitude info here but then again who wants to give away precise GPS coordinates to their fav fishing hole or whatever right? Some things we should have to do for ourselves anyways and I always use tracking software so as to precisely spot where each image was taken anyways (speaking as a photog). So yes it's a useful book and an interesting one written by a native of Minnesota who attended the forestry school here and knows what he is talking about. The lack of a legible map in the thing while annoying isn't major as these are freely available anyways and if you are carrying a Garmin for instance you probably already are a leg up anyways.

5 stars not because it's a literary masterpiece, but it's thoroughly researched and I can't think of anything they could add to make it better.
