It fulfilled it's purpose. I got this book for my art history class, and I probably wouldn't have read it other wise. I'm fascinated with what I have been learning in class with this book. Now we move onto the next part of history, and the next book from the package. I only dropped a star because it wasn't something I picked to read for myself. Those who aren't interested in art or history may find it boring. Also the book I have is much longer than 2-300 pages.

Compared to Gardner's, I've always found Stokstad's language about art history to be clearer and provides more of a narrative structure in which to enjoy art history at large. There are moments of the flowery prose (READ: Giotto's "monumentality"), but overall is better at plainly stating the context of each art epoch and how styles fit into said environment.
