It's not often you read a caterpillar/butterfly story featuring a black swallowtail, but I'm so glad Ernst's does. My students (3-5 year olds) have raised black swallowtails several times and the story gives them an opportunity to identify key black swallowtail facts (the plants they eat and live near, features of their bodies, their ability to overwinter, and so on), and yet it's all packaged in a fictional, anthropomorphic tale. Plus it offers some interesting opportunities for conversation about ability (Trixie's crimped wing), external transformation, and internal integrity.
